We are committed to identifying and eliminating systemic and structural biases, racism and other injustices, and to enhancing diversity and inclusion, both within our community and as an essential element of our work in quantitative science and population health. With input from our entire community, we pursue strategies to promote equity through advocacy, education, outreach, recruitment and training, as well as in research, where our investigators continue to uncover clear disparities across a wide range of health outcomes.
Just as important, we recognize that members of historically marginalized communities experience the impact of racism in different ways, and we pledge to act with respect and empathy for all in our everyday interactions. We feel deeply Penn Medicine’s initiative to eliminate structural injustice: nothing less than true cultural transformation will accomplish this goal.
The spring 2021 verdict that held Derek Chauvin accountable for the murder of George Floyd represented a hopeful step toward righting historical injustices for our nation — and we know that it was just a beginning. We recognize that the system that allowed the demise of Mr. Floyd and so many other Black Americans is still in place, and that we must act to create change.
