Gary Weissman, MD, MSHP

Assistant Professor of Medicine and Informatics

Dr. Weissman is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. In his clinical work, he cares for patients with sepsis, respiratory failure, and other life-threatening conditions in the medical intensive care unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the development of predictive clinical decision support systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods. His lab builds such systems to support complex decision making under uncertainty to promote population health management, diagnostic excellence, and personalized treatments. His work also seeks to promote equity and transparency in the policy interventions and frameworks related to the evaluation and regulation of AI/ML clinical decision support systems. Dr. Weissman was selected in 2024 as a National Academy of Medicine Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence and his work has been supported by several NIH grants from NHLBI, NIA, and NIGMS.

Dr. Weissman received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College (Physics, 2002), his medical degree from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University (MD, 2011), and Master of Science in Health Policy Research (2017) from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He completed residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine both at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
